Vanishing Arts

Chinese Opera has survived modernisation & continued to be performed in many parts of Singapore. A handful of these traditional performing street operas (街邊大戲) can still be found surviving the cruelty of modernisation and digitalisation.

Founded in 1864, Lao Sai Tao Yuan Teochew Opera Troupe (老赛桃源潮剧团) is one of the many that has come through to this day. It spanned a history for more than 150 years and it is undoubtedly among the oldest and one of the few remaining iconic Teochew opera troupes in Singapore.

Many of these performers themselves have aged but they pushed forward even knowingly aware of what the future lies ahead for them.

The relentless efforts in holding its rich traditions and cultural values has given us a glimpse into the history of a vanishing art form.

These photos portrayed the joys, pains and life of these beautiful and talented artists who have persisted until this present day.
